Woman killed by early morning drunk driver

MARIGOT--An out-of-control car took the life of a woman and injured at least two others during a high speed accident in Lowtown, Marigot, in the early morning hours of Monday.

The deceased has been named as Veronica Alberts (34) from Dominica. She was apparently helping to load materials onto a garbage truck on the street at about 1:45am when she was struck by the car and thrown into the air as the vehicle then crashed into the garbage truck.

She died in the hospital from leg injuries that were too severe to be contained. An occupant of the truck and the driver of the car were also injured.

The Gendarmerie confirmed that the driver of the car had been "under the influence of alcohol" and was taken into custody, though the amount of alcohol consumed was not disclosed.

President of the St. James Community Council Paul Whit expressed shock at the senseless loss of an innocent life and called for speed bumps to be placed on the main road in Lowtown.

Alberts had previously been living in Lowtown, but had recently moved to Grand Case. The day before the accident she had been enjoying a birthday party on a beach.

I committed the crime of accidently dropping a chocolate milkshake on the floor of Burger King Yesterday. So they called the police, and the police came deep over a dropped milkshake. Evidently if you accidently drop any type of food, it's signs of "anti social" behaviour. What is St Maarten coming to, when these retarded police officers manage to lose, three murderous prisoners, they spend their time beating on their own wife and kids who are scared to report it to their friends at the police department. They spend their time collecting grafts and bribes, and hang with actual true criminals. Four police officers are still under investigation for taking bribes. Who are the police officers that worked on the inside to assist those escaped prisoners. Who did Marcel Loor have at Juliana Airport working for him to ensure he got through with that kilo of cocaine. How moronic is our police department, how much time do they have on their hands, when there are actual crimes going on, and they chose not to show up on the scene. Then they sent my cousin because I guess it's entertaining now to have Ashley Roumou hassle Judith Roumou, but I have Ashley Roumou on video talking about the true psychopath Claudie Rogers. Very fascinating. The Dutch are down here being escorted around by our criminal police department, talking about "ethics" and "integrity", when St Maarten's most prolific criminals are the police, their kin and their associates.

And Kendall Dupersoy, I wish you the best in next years election considering you've lost more voters with your actions of late than anyone else. Then you want to come on Facebook with bull, showing your true colors. I was one of your few defenders, but I do realize now that everything said about you being a backstabbing snake was true. I like I said google your name leading up to next year's election. Kendall Dupersoy, you people had the power and you lost it, now you're just another Theo Heyliger goon!

A weather disturbance in the open Atlantic moving toward the Caribbean developed into Tropical Storm Chantal late last night. It was located about 865 miles East-Southeast of Barbados at 11:00pm moving West at 26 miles per hour with minimum central pressure 1,000mb, maximum sustained winds near forty miles per hour, with higher gusts and some strenghtening forecast during the next 48 hours. Tropical storm force winds extended outward upt to sixty miles from the centre. more info below

According to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), issued at 11:00 a.m. PST, a system off the coast of Mexico that, as of Thursday had barely been a tropical depression, has since been upgraded to full-fledged Tropical Storm Erick.

Erick is located approximately 135 miles south of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico and approximately 240 miles south-southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico. The storm is moving to the west-northwest at approximately 12 mph and is expected to continue on this course for the next 24 to 48 hours. Forecasters say the center of Erick will move parallel to the shore but remain off the southwestern coast of Mexico.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to around 65 mph, with higher gusts being recorded. Tropical storm force winds are currently extending outward up to 90 miles from the center of the tropical storm, which is expected to increase in strength and be upgraded to a hurricane by Saturday.

A tropical storm warning is currently in effect for Zihuatanejo, Mexico to La Fortuna. As such, tropical storm conditions are expected in the affected area within the next 36 hours.

A tropical storm watch is in effect in Mexico west of La Fortuna to Cabo Corrientes. Residents in this area are advised that tropical storm conditions may develop in the area and that they should prepare for this possibility.

The NHC warns that hazards affecting land include rainfall and wind.

Forecasters anticipate Erick will drop approximately 3 to 5 inches of rain over southwestern Oaxaca, southern Guerrero, southern Michoaca, Colima and southern Jalisco. It’s possible that in some areas, isolated maximum amounts of rainfall accumulations may reach or top 8 inches. Be advised that these rains may cause potentially life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

In terms of winds affecting the Mexican coast, tropical storm conditions are expected to spread westward across the aforementioned warning area on Friday and through Saturday. By late in the day on Saturday, tropical storm conditions are possible west of La Fortuna.

The NHC is slated to release its next public advisory on this storm at approximately 2:00 p.m. PST. Stay tuned for continued coverage.

POLICE DETAIN THREE, ONE STILL AT LARGE IN CAR CHASE IN ST PETERS. SHOTS FIRED

Police detained three young men after chasing a Hyundai 110 with the number plate P9178 and a brief foot chase through St Peters on Saturday evening. It could not be ascertained whether the police had managed to apprehend a fourth suspect who had been in the pursued vehicle. Police spokesperson Inspector Ricardo Henson could not be reached by phone for comment on Sunday. Information from the Herald indicated that the car chase had begun in the vicinity of Man Chung Supermarket, also known as the Sheik Supermarket on L.B. Scott Road. The vehicle apparaently had been involved in a hit and run accident the day before and the police wanted to stop it in connection with the previous accidnet, but as they approached the vehicle the driver sped off and turned into Messapple Road with the police in hot pursuit. THe car chase continued onto Grapefruit Road, Lemon Road up St Peters and then unto Genip Road and Marigot Hill Road, where the occupants abandoned the vehhicle and fled on foot. The police managed to detain three of the men, one of whom was in the nearby bushes and one who fled down the street. Shots were fired at on point during the chase. The ambulance Dept. was called to the scene to check on one of the men who had a scratch on his forehead. Several police officers with a number of vehicles were involved.
