CAY HILL–Chaos erupted at the Yogesh building early Wednesday when gynaecologist/obstetrician Dr. Randall Friday was shot as he made his way to his Women’s Health Services (WHS) clinic located on the second floor of the building around 8:30am.

Friday’s partner Erica Fortuno told the local newspaper the 38-year-old gynaecologist and businessman had been shot twice in the passageway leading to his office. One of the bullets grazed Friday’s leg and the other penetrated the side of his body Fortuno said.

Friday was shot from behind close to the entrance of his clinic. He collapsed after being shot.

A number of persons, some of whom are believed to be his patients, were outside the clinic’s entrance on the second floor when the two shots were fired at Friday. It is believed he was followed from his vehicle, then shot, after which the shooter fled.

The clinic was packed with patients waiting to be seen by the gynaecologist/obstetrician. Persons who were outside the clinic scrambled for cover after hearing the shots, some running into the clinic, while patients who were inside started running to the back of the clinic in a rush for safety. It is believed that patients did not see the shooter from their vantage point, though this could not be confirmed.

Friday’s nurse responded to the commotion by going outside to see what had transpired and saw Dr. Friday on the ground. Friday told his nurse he thought he had been shot, the nurse grabbed her keys and rushed him to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) where he underwent surgery to remove the bullet from his side and to determine the extent of his injuries, Fortuno said. The doctor had walked to the car that transported him to the hospital.

Friday was in stable condition when he arrived at the hospital, police spokesperson Inspector Ricardo Henson said in a police press release issued mid-afternoon Wednesday.

Friday called Fortuno just after the incident and told her he had been shot and she should meet him at SMMC. He also called other close family members.

By the time the news of the shooting spread a large number of family members and friends had gathered at SMMC for news on the wounded doctor. “This [shooting – Ed.] came out of nowhere,” Fortuno said, adding that the incident had left many persons traumatised.

The shooting has left many in the community, including Friday’s patients, in disbelief and shock. Workers in offices located in the Yogesh Building were also shocked at the brazen daylight assault. One person expressed concern about the safety of the building in which the shooting took place, describing the area where the stairs are located as an “unpleasant area” that cannot be avoided as there are no elevators in the building.

Friday was out of the operating room by late last night and in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for recovery and observation. Henson said in the release that Friday was “stable and doing well.”

SMMC has taken measures to cater to the continuity of care of Friday’s patients (see related story).

Both Henson and Prosecutor Tineke N.M. Kamps confirmed that Friday had been shot in separate e-mails to the media yesterday.

Henson said several police patrols, detectives and paramedics had been sent to the Yogesh Building on A.J.C. Brouwer Road around 8:45am, shortly after the shooting. On the scene the investigating officers spoke to witnesses who confirmed that the victim was the gynaecologist.

Henson said Friday had been taken to SMMC in a private vehicle before the ambulance arrived on the scene. He said the scene had been secured by the police immediately, allowing the Forensic Department to start collecting evidence.

No one had been identified or arrested as a possible suspect in this case up to press time. The investigation is in its preliminary stages and the police are requesting that anyone who may have any information in connection to this investigation come forward. Friday became the first St. Maarten-born gynaecologist to operate in St. Maarten when he opened his modern health care facility, Women’s Health Services, in September 2008. He was also the youngest specialist to operate in the country when he opened his clinic. The former St. Maarten Academy student is the only gynaecologist to offer 3D and 4D ultrasounds at his clinic. He was also the first to perform gynaecological laparoscopic surgeries here.

MARIGOT–The lifeless body of a man was found on the rocks offshore near the whale observation platform on Coralita Road between French Quarter and Oyster Pond on Sunday.

Commandant Paul Betaille of the Gendarmerie confirmed the body discovered at 8:00am was that of an Antillean black man in his 30s. He added murder is suspected, but declined to give any further information that could compromise the investigation.

Elsewhere over the weekend, some 10 Gendarmes conducted a traffic control at the Agrément roundabout on Saturday night between 8:00 and 11:00, mainly to check sobriety of motorists. Thirty car drivers were pulled over in the control, seven of whom were found to be over the legal limit to various degrees for alcohol consumption.

Present to observe the control were Préfet Philippe Chopin, Commandant Paul Betaille and Commandant of the mobile division 47/1 from Dijon, Commandant Le Guen.

So Marcel Loor is supposed to have a lot of information on our Dutch Law Enforcement, he’s is ALLOWED out of Dutch St Maarten with a kilo of cocaine, but they were WAITING for him in France. France don’t play, he can say that it was planted, but Loor already has an infamous criminal record, and seems proud of it. Without any doubt the French won’t tease him like the Dutch penal system did, they are going to execute to the full extent of the law. ANGUILLA–Seven young men received gunshot wounds to various parts of their bodies in a shooting incident at Blowing Point that sent shock waves through the usually tranquil community of Anguilla on Monday evening.

Three of them are in a serious condition and two already have been flown to Puerto Rico for further medical attention. Another may have to be sent overseas. Three of the injured have been dismissed from Princess Alexandra Hospital.

ANGUILLA--The Royal Anguilla Police Force has seized 31 bales of cocaine with an estimated street value of US$25 million in an operation held between Wednesday, July 17 and Friday, July 19.

Three nationals from the Dominican Republic were arrested and are presently in police custody assisting with the police investigation.

The cocaine was seized from a small island off the west coast of Anguilla. Two automatic firearms and several rounds of ammunition were also confiscated.

Woman killed by early morning drunk driver

MARIGOT--An out-of-control car took the life of a woman and injured at least two others during a high speed accident in Lowtown, Marigot, in the early morning hours of Monday.

The deceased has been named as Veronica Alberts (34) from Dominica. She was apparently helping to load materials onto a garbage truck on the street at about 1:45am when she was struck by the car and thrown into the air as the vehicle then crashed into the garbage truck.

She died in the hospital from leg injuries that were too severe to be contained. An occupant of the truck and the driver of the car were also injured.

The Gendarmerie confirmed that the driver of the car had been "under the influence of alcohol" and was taken into custody, though the amount of alcohol consumed was not disclosed.

President of the St. James Community Council Paul Whit expressed shock at the senseless loss of an innocent life and called for speed bumps to be placed on the main road in Lowtown.

Alberts had previously been living in Lowtown, but had recently moved to Grand Case. The day before the accident she had been enjoying a birthday party on a beach.

A weather disturbance in the open Atlantic moving toward the Caribbean developed into Tropical Storm Chantal late last night. It was located about 865 miles East-Southeast of Barbados at 11:00pm  moving West at 26 miles per hour with minimum central pressure 1,000mb, maximum sustained winds near forty miles per hour, with higher gusts and some strenghtening forecast during the next 48 hours. According to the latest update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC), issued at 11:00 a.m. PST, a system off the coast of Mexico that, as of Thursday had barely been a tropical depression, has since been upgraded to full-fledged Tropical Storm Erick.

Erick is located approximately 135 miles south of Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico and approximately 240 miles south-southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico. The storm is moving to the west-northwest at approximately 12 mph and is expected to continue on this course for the next 24 to 48 hours. Forecasters say the center of Erick will move parallel to the shore but remain off the southwestern coast of Mexico.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to around 65 mph, with higher gusts being recorded. Tropical storm force winds are currently extending outward up to 90 miles from the center of the tropical storm, which is expected to increase in strength and be upgraded to a hurricane by Saturday.

A tropical storm warning is currently in effect for Zihuatanejo, Mexico to La Fortuna. As such, tropical storm conditions are expected in the affected area within the next 36 hours.

A tropical storm watch is in effect in Mexico west of La Fortuna to Cabo Corrientes. Residents in this area are advised that tropical storm conditions may develop in the area and that they should prepare for this possibility.

The NHC warns that hazards affecting land include rainfall and wind.

Forecasters anticipate Erick will drop approximately 3 to 5 inches of rain over southwestern Oaxaca, southern Guerrero, southern Michoaca, Colima and southern Jalisco. It’s possible that in some areas, isolated maximum amounts of rainfall accumulations may reach or top 8 inches. Be advised that these rains may cause potentially life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.

In terms of winds affecting the Mexican coast, tropical storm conditions are expected to spread westward across the aforementioned warning area on Friday and through Saturday. By late in the day on Saturday, tropical storm conditions are possible west of La Fortuna.

The NHC is slated to release its next public advisory on this storm at approximately 2:00 p.m. PST. Stay tuned for continued coverage.
